Throughout my 29 years in Umoja, this is the first time I have made a product knowing there is a ready customer. At times, some of our products would last more than a year before they would sell. Though we would sell some things, it was not clear what a tourist would prefer most. We had to keep making jewellery and use the trial-and-error method to figure it out.
Today with the Umoja Jewellery website, we know exactly what to make and are even taught new ideas. We can see prints and recreate the exact design. Every member is given an equal amount of items to produce and we are paid instantly.
At this point in time, if the Umoja Women visits any other village, they are treated with high esteem because they are viewed not as competitors, but opportunity givers. We were told with our Matriarch and Founder Rebecca Lolosoli, that these orders will increase with time and we need to ready ourselves for more production and quality. This is a sign of a bright future for us and our children.
