Daina Lekanta
I am a mother of three and Umoja’s garden laborer. Umoja Jewellery has doubled my income and has even gone above-and-beyond turning around my family’s economic situation. I bought my three children new clothing and there is adequate food in our home.
I am the most active member concentrating on the Umoja gardens. We no longer have goats and sheep as they were taken from us by the Turkana community on March 1, 2017. Samburus traditionally are not accustomed to farming, but we are trying to learn from Merians in the town teaching us slowly how to make a living.
When I take a break from gardening, I work on jewellery orders. I sit underneath the comfortable shade in the gardens, beads products, and complete my list of orders in good time. I am overjoyed that all the women in the village and our neighbouring sister villages are given jewelry orders. It has changed our lives. I am also happy because we get the money for our items instantly and that increases our morale. We now have financial security and we pray for orders to keep increasing as we have seen in 2019.
